East Hants Prospective Liberal Democrat MP Adam Carew, County Councillor Tony Ludlow and other Alton Councillors will be collecting signatures in Alton over the coming weeks to petition East Hants District Council to reverse it's decision to hike car parking charges and charge for Sunday parking.
Adam Carew who is also lead member for EHDC Lib Dem group on environment and Hampshire County Councillor said
"We believe EHDC's decision to hike parking charges and charge on Sundays has had a detrimental effect on Alton residents, Alton traders and visitors to the town. Traders in Alton and Petersfield have to compete against places like Farnham, Basingstoke and Portsmouth. We should be encouraging more people to shop in East Hampshire to cut carbon and support our local businesses during the credit crunch. These stealth taxes will just put them off.
Public pressure and Liberal Democrat opposition have just managed to overturn the Tories controversial plans to sell off our public open space. We are hoping that our petitions against increased car parking charges in Alton and Petersfield will help do the same."
County Councillor Tony Ludlow who is former leader of East Hants Lib Dem group said " East Hants Liberal Democrats opposed the hikes in car parking from the start. We petitioned Conservative run Hampshire County Council not to approve EHDC's increased charges but it fell on deaf ears. Then we gave Tory run EHDC a chance to get themselves off the hook when we introduced a motion to repeal both Sunday Parking Charges and Car Parking hikes earlier this year - they did not take it.
Charging on Sunday when many shops are not open is of dubious need and will penalise people coming to see friends or relatives or even going to religious worship. It will also make Sunday events organised by the town council and other community organisations far less attractive."
Adam, Tony and Lib Dem councillors will be collecting signatures in Alton and Petersfield over the coming weeks.
We urge residents, traders and shoppers to sign it.
